How it's calculated
- C1 × V1 = C2 × V2 (concentration × volume is conserved)
- Final volume V2 = C1 × V1 ÷ C2; diluent to add = V2 − V1
Worked example — 5 mg/mL × 1 mL diluted to 2.5 mg/mL gives a final volume of 2 mL, so you add 1 mL of diluent.
Frequently asked questions
How do I dilute a peptide to a lower concentration?
Use C1V1 = C2V2. The final volume is your current concentration times current volume, divided by the target concentration. Subtract the current volume to get how much diluent to add.
Can I make a peptide more concentrated by dilution?
No. Adding diluent can only lower the concentration. To reach a higher concentration you would need to reconstitute with less water, not dilute an existing solution.
