mg, mcg, and Units — What They Actually Measure

1 mg equals 1000 mcg — both measure the mass of peptide. Units measure something different: they are marks on an insulin syringe, where 100 units equal 1 mL on a U-100. So a dose in mcg converts to units only once you know the concentration you mixed: at 2.5 mg/mL, 250 mcg is 10 units. Here is how the three connect.

Milligrams and micrograms measure the peptide itself

A milligram (mg) and a microgram (mcg, sometimes written µg) both measure a mass of peptide — how much of the substance is physically present. They differ only by scale: 1 mg equals 1000 mcg, the same relationship as 1 metre to 1000 millimetres.

Vials are usually labelled in milligrams (a "5 mg vial"), because that is a convenient size for manufacturing and shipping. Doses are usually discussed in micrograms, because a single dose is a small fraction of the whole vial and micrograms avoid awkward decimals.

Units measure a syringe, not the peptide

A "unit" in this calculator is not a measure of peptide at all — it is a mark on an insulin syringe's barrel, and what it corresponds to depends on the printed calibration. A U-100 syringe is calibrated so 100 unit marks equal 1 millilitre of liquid; a U-40 syringe has 40 unit marks per 1 mL.

That means the same physical draw — say, 0.1 mL of solution — reads as 10 units on a U-100 syringe but 4 units on a U-40 syringe. The syringe type has to match what you enter in a calculator, or the unit reading will be wrong even though the maths is correct.

How the three connect

Concentration is the bridge between mass and volume: it is the milligrams (or micrograms) in the vial divided by the millilitres of liquid, usually written mg/mL or mcg/mL. Once you know the concentration, a given mass (mcg) converts to a volume (mL), and that volume converts to units once you know the syringe type.

Worked conversions: mcg to units on a U-100 syringe

The same dose in mcg is a different number of units at every concentration, which is why a converter has to know the mg/mL you mixed. These examples assume a U-100 syringe (100 units per 1 mL); on a U-40 syringe every figure below is divided by 2.5 because U-40 places 40 marks in the same 1 mL.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1 mg the same as 1000 units?

No — mg and units measure completely different things, so there is no fixed conversion between them. 1 mg is always 1000 mcg (a mass), but how many units that becomes on a syringe depends on the concentration you mixed and the syringe type.

Why do syringes use units instead of mL?

Insulin syringes were designed with fine unit markings because insulin doses are small and precise; peptide users adopted the same syringes since they are cheap, widely available, and accurate at very small volumes. The unit marks are just a finer scale than a mL ruling.

Does the unit reading change what dose I'm actually getting?

No. Units are just a readout of volume for a given syringe. The mass of peptide in that volume is fixed by the concentration you mixed — changing syringe type changes the number on the barrel, not the amount of peptide drawn for the same volume.

How many units is 200 mcg?

It depends on the concentration you mixed. At 2.5 mg/mL, 200 mcg is 8 units on a U-100 syringe; at 5 mg/mL it is 4 units; at 10 mg/mL it is 2 units. The same dose in mcg is a different number of units at every concentration, so enter your actual mixed mg/mL rather than relying on a fixed rule.

How many units is 300 mcg?

At 2.5 mg/mL, 300 mcg is 12 units on a U-100 syringe; at 5 mg/mL it is 6 units; at 10 mg/mL it is 3 units. On a U-40 syringe each of those figures is divided by 2.5. Your mixed concentration is the variable that decides the number.

How many units is 500 mcg?

At 2.5 mg/mL, 500 mcg is 20 units on a U-100 syringe; at 5 mg/mL it is 10 units; at 10 mg/mL it is 5 units. Confirm the mg/mL you actually mixed before drawing — the value is only correct for that concentration.
