U-100 vs U-40 Syringes: Scale vs Capacity

A U-100 syringe has 100 unit marks per 1 mL; a U-40 syringe has 40 marks per 1 mL. The same 0.1 mL of liquid therefore reads as 10 units on U-100 and 4 units on U-40 — the scale changes the number on the barrel, not the volume drawn. Capacity is a separate specification: a "50-unit syringe" is usually a 0.5 mL U-100, not a "U-50" scale.

What the U-number means

The number after "U" identifies the scale the syringe was designed to match. U-100 markings place 100 unit marks across 1 mL; U-40 markings place 40 across 1 mL. It is a calibration, not the syringe's maximum capacity.

Because the scale is different, the same physical volume of liquid lines up with a different number of units on each syringe. Reading the wrong syringe type against a units figure will not change how much liquid is actually drawn, but it will make the number on the barrel meaningless for that calculation.

A 50-unit syringe is usually 0.5 mL of U-100

Common U-100 syringes are sold in 0.3 mL, 0.5 mL, and 1 mL capacities. Their maximum markings are typically 30, 50, and 100 units respectively, but all three remain U-100 because every 100 U-100 marks correspond to 1 mL.

So a package described as a "50-unit syringe" commonly means a 0.5 mL U-100 syringe. Do not enter 50 units/mL into a calculator unless the device documentation explicitly states that calibration.

Comparing U-100 and U-40

U-100 is the common human-insulin syringe scale in the United States. U-40 syringes exist for products formulated at 40 units/mL, including some veterinary insulin products and some markets outside the United States.

The same 0.1 mL volume aligns with the 10-unit mark on U-100 and the 4-unit mark on U-40. PiDose supports these two printed scales so the arithmetic can match the barrel being read; it does not recommend a syringe or a product.

Why it matters for a calculator result

Every calculator on this site asks for syringe calibration for exactly this reason: the units figure is only arithmetically aligned with the scale selected. If the physical syringe is printed U-40 but the calculator remains on its U-100 default, the units number will not match that barrel.

A 0.5 mL U-100 syringe that ends at 50 units is still U-100. The 50 describes its maximum capacity, not a U-50 calibration.

How do I know what syringe type I have?

Check the syringe barrel and packaging for the printed calibration, usually U-100 or U-40, separately from capacity such as 0.3 mL, 0.5 mL, or 1 mL. If the scale is unclear, do not infer it from the maximum number alone.

Is a 50-unit syringe the same as a U-50 syringe?

Usually no. A common 50-unit insulin syringe is a 0.5 mL syringe calibrated U-100: it holds up to 50 U-100 units but still has 100 unit marks per mL. Capacity and calibration are different specifications.

Can I use a U-100 syringe if my calculation was done for U-40?

Does a smaller syringe hold less liquid?
